Photographers everywhere are invited to join Ohio’s largest photo contest, Shoot the Hills. Held annually in the Hocking Hills State Park, the contest strives to promote nature photography. More than $3,000 in cash and prizes will be awarded to 80 winners at the conclusion of the 3-day photography event, April 18-20, 2008. The contest is open to amateurs, pros, and juniors alike. It features separate divisions for film, digital point-n-shoot, and digital SLR photographers.
Shoot the Hills is an official fundraiser of the Friends of the Hocking Hills State Park, and profits are used for special projects in the Park, such as building and maintaining photo-friendly wildlife blinds and habitats within the Park. These special areas include nesting boxes and feeding stations for local and migrating waterfowl and wildlife, and a new butterfly habitat (under construction).
Contest categories are:
Wildlife,
Flora,
Landscape,
Human Interest in Nature, and
Abstracts in Nature.
Each photographer may enter a total of five images in his/her division, but no more than two entries in any one category. All entries must be photographed during the designated 24-hour period during the event weekend (from Friday at 1:00 p.m. to Saturday at 1:00 p.m.).
Photographers may enter only once in the Digital Division and/or once in the Film Division. Entry fee for the Film Division and Digital SLR Division is $35; entry fee for the Digital Point-n-Shoot Division is $25. There is a $5 discount for registrations that are received before April 13.
A new Print Division has been added to Shoot the Hills. Unmatted and unframed prints measuring 8x10 inches may be entered, and photographers may enter any quantity. (Identification on back side only, please.) We would like to encourage photographers to submit images that showcase the Hocking Hills Region, of course. However, entries may include any subject, topic, or area as long as all other contest rules are honored and the image is suitable for “family viewing.”
Entry fee for the Print Division is $50 per photo, and one winner will receive 50% of entry monies for this division! The Print Division is not judged as a regular division, instead photos are voted on by the public for a nominal ticket fee (20 voting tickets for only $1, plus a door prize coupon). Proceeds from the ticket sales benefit special projects in the Park.
Additionally, from the Print Division, one photo will be selected by the Hocking Hills Tourism Association that “best promotes tourism in Ohio’s Hocking Hills Region.” The photographer of that chosen print will receive an etched glass award, entitled, “Highlight of the Hills,” and that image will be published in the official Hocking Hills Visitors Guide (230,000 copies in print annually).
Shoot the Hills Photography Weekend includes a variety of photography programs, naturalist programs that are free and open to the public. There will also be open house and reception on Saturday from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m.; it too is open to all. The event will be held at the Hocking Hills Dining Lodge on SR 664 South in Logan (near Old Man’s Cave).
